In 1996, Veterinarians Kevin Concannon, Gary Spodnick and Jerry Waddle envisioned a hospital where a sick or injured animal could be diagnosed and treated by a team of specialists and emergency doctors any time of the day or night.

In 1997 the Veterinary Specialty Hospital of the Carolinas became a reality and opened its doors in a 4,000 square foot space.  The hospital quickly outgrew the space by adding more doctors and equipment to treat the growing caseload.

By 2001 additional space was needed and a new tenant was added.  Antech, a national veterinary laboratory, joined VSH in their facility making VSH the only veterinary hospital in N.C. with access to state-of-the-art lab equipment and an on-site clinical pathologist.

2003 saw VSH build its own 24,000 square foot hospital on Tryon Road in Cary.

By 2004 VSH was the first private, veterinary hospital in North or South Carolina to employ a board certified radiation oncologist.  VSH was also the first veterinary hospital in the state to use a linear accelerator for radiation therapy.

A digital radiology system was installed in 2005 making VSH more efficient for its staff and patients.

In 2006, VSH expanded by opening an additional facility in North Raleigh at 4640 Paragon Park Road, a half mile north of 540 off of Capital Boulevard. The 6,000 square foot facility provides internal medicine, surgical and emergency services.
