Oncology Externships

The oncology student experience will take place at our Cary hospital. Our Cary oncology staff consists of several oncologists and five full-time veterinary technicians solely dedicated to the service. We are truly a comprehensive cancer hospital providing surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy for patients.  Close coordination with the surgery service provides the patient with a team of board certified specialists deciding what approaches are best for the individual patient.

VSH is committed to chemotherapy safety and provides a vertical flow, chemotherapy hood and Phaseal drug infusion technology. A Siemens Mevatron linear accelerator provides radiation therapy capabilities complete with three-dimensional treatment planning.  Both electron and photon therapy are possible allowing for customized therapy. Diagnostic capabilities include digital radiography, ultrasonagraphy and spiral computed tomography (CT).  In addition we have access to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) though the Animalscan facility on the NCSU campus.

This rotation is clinical in nature and will provide minimal didactic teaching. Students will shadow clinicians and technicians in order to provide the maximum benefit and exposure to veterinary oncology. We are committed to exposing students to exemplary communication skills, practical staging of cancer patients, discussion of treatment options and the delivery of multimodality cancer care. This is a hands-on rotation and students should be prepared to assist with animal contact at the discretion of the supervising veterinarian.  We encourage students to spend a minimum of one full day in order to fully appreciate our service.
