The surgery student experience will take place at our Cary hospital. Our Cary surgery staff consists of 3 surgeons supported by a staff of highly trained and experienced veterinary technicians. Our team is capable of diagnosing and treating neurologic (spinal), orthopedic, thoracic, gastrointestinal, oncologic, and reconstructive surgical cases. We also provide surgical services to critically ill or injured animals on a 24-hour basis with all emergency surgeries performed by a board certified specialist. Exemplary surgical care addresses the patient’s pre-, intra, and post-operative needs. Technicians as well as critical care and emergency doctors ensure seamless postoperative patient care throughout the day and night. We work closely with the other specialties within the hospital providing surgical consultation for oncology, internal medicine, critical care, and the ER services.
This rotation is clinical in nature and will provide minimal didactic teaching. Students will shadow surgeons and technicians during their rotation in order to provide the maximum benefit and exposure to veterinary surgery. This is a hands-on rotation and students should be prepared to assist on an as-needed basis and patient contact will be at the discretion of the supervising veterinarian. We encourage students to spend a minimum of one full day in order to fully appreciate our service.
