The emergency doctors are available at night and on the weekends to see walk-in emergencies, care for hospitalized patients, and admit referrals that have difficulty coming to the hospital during weekday hours. VSH recruits experienced, emergency doctors who have internship or related experience in a referral environment.
Because we never know what problems your pet might have, the veterinary nursing staff will triage patients in the lobby and bring them immediately to our treatment area if they have concerns about the pet’s condition. |
| Bleeding, breathing difficulties, seizures, or shock are all reasons to be taken to the back and treated immediately. |

Veterinary nursing staff will collect vital signs in the treatment area. Simple blood testing, IV catheterization and oxygen administration may also be done at this time. Because a prolonged discussion would slow down potentially life saving care, we ask permission to start these treatment before collecting the patient history. The doctor or a veterinary nurse will speak to you and gather this information after stabilization has started.

Doctors and veterinary nurses are in the hospital 24 hours a day to continually monitor and care for our patients. Care which is instituted by the specialists during the day will be maintained at night. Treatments can be easily modified at any time to meet changing patient status. |
| The emergency doctors have training and experience in a broad area of veterinary medicine and surgery rather than in one specific area. The VSH emergency team sees a wide variety of medical problems ranging from minor infections to life threatening trauma. Surgeons and internists are on call to perform major surgery, ultrasound examinations, or other specialized procedures. |
