Volunteer Job Responsibilities

The volunteer will serve as a representative of the hospital and display courtesy, tact, consideration, and a positive attitude in all interactions with clients, patients and other members of the hospital staff.

Essential Duties:

To enhance the quality of life and alleviate suffering of companion animals by providing multidisciplinary, state of the art veterinary care; fostering the owner-companion animal-veterinarian bond; and increasing the awareness of veterinary specialty care.  These goals will happen in a work environment that is profitable and personally fulfilling.

Job skills & physical demands: Basic computer knowledge and good communication skills. Must be able to multi-task.  Pushing, pulling, repetitive bending, kneeling, squatting and heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs) may be required.  Must be able to work on feet for extended periods of time.

General responsibilities: Volunteers are responsible for assisting technicians in their day-to-day responsibilities.  Additional duties or responsibilities may be added depending on the aptitude of individual volunteers.

• Feed and walk patients
• Assist with and perform animal restraint
• Help position patients for radiology procedures
• Ordering, preparing, and submitting blood work to an outside laboratory
• Running in-house blood tests (blood glucose, I-Stat, PCV/TS) and reporting results to nurse on case.
• Completing studies in radiology software.
• Maintain a clean and sanitary environment in the medicine ward, oncology ward, surgery ward, runs, kennels and ICU.  Clean cages when necessary.
• Assisting with end of shift duties
• Provide comfort to the patients by providing clean laundry
• Maintain laundry area and equipment in an organized and sanitary manner
• Dispose of waste as needed to keep clinical area free of debris and to limit odors
• Vacuum and mop floors on a regular schedule
• Assist the nurses by keeping alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and disinfecting solutions stocked and bottled for use
• Keep patient bowls and food areas clean, sanitary, and well stocked
• Maintain an organized, clutter-free, sanitary break area
• Keep clinical areas such as countertops, shelves, computers, desks, and equipment free of dust
